A Guide to Reporting on Homelessness

From a Journalist’s Perspective

As more of our neighbors nationwide are forced into homelessness, journalists are expanding their coverage of this complex issue. Covering homelessness requires journalists to take a 360-view, going in-depth with government officials, advocates, policy makers and others to cover the housing, economics and racial justice dynamics that lead to homelessness. At the same time, they should also engage in trauma-informed reporting when talking with individuals experiencing homelessness. In this media webinar, Street Sense Media Editor-in-Chief Will Schick and Seattle Times Editor Molly Harbarger join us to discuss key practices for reporting on homelessness that lead to more nuanced coverage of this hot-button issue for so many communities. The session is moderated by former journalist Marisol Bello, Executive Director of the Housing Narrative Lab.
